Aviation Industry Leaders Discuss Sustainability at ICAO AFI Week

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) AFI (Africa-India Ocean) Week, currently underway at Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe, has sparked a lively discussion on sustainability in the aviation industry.

A panel on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Feasibility and Business Implementation Studies, moderated by Poppy Khoza, Director-General of the South Africa CAA, explored the critical role of SAF in achieving the ICAO Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG).

Potential of African States in SAF Production

ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano emphasised the significance of African States in the production of SAF, highlighting their potential to lead in this transformative sector.

He introduced the ICAO Finvest Hub, a platform designed to connect aviation sustainability projects with investors worldwide, which could be used to propel sustainable aviation initiatives across the continent.

In his remarks at the event, Sciacchitano highlighted Africa’s critical role in the future of global aviation, especially as the continent prepares for unprecedented growth in passenger and cargo traffic.

He also stressed the need to align regional efforts with ICAO’s 2026-2050 Strategic Plan, recently adopted by the Council, with a strong focus on our “No Country Left Behind” goal.

“This week presents valuable opportunities for collaboration and action. I look forward to productive outcomes that will enhance air connectivity, safety, and sustainability across the continent,” Sciacchitano said.

Collective Action for a Sustainable Aviation Industry

The dialogue underscored the importance of collective action in enhancing sustainability within the aviation industry.

Industry leaders and stakeholders are working together to address the challenges and opportunities in achieving a more sustainable aviation sector.

Uganda’s Representation at ICAO AFI Week

Uganda is being represented at the ICAO AFI Week by the Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Fred Bamwesigye, who was recently elected as the Vice President of the ICAO.

This highlights Uganda’s growing influence in the aviation industry and its commitment to promoting sustainable aviation practices.

Step Towards a Greener Aviation Industry

The discussions at ICAO AFI Week demonstrate the aviation industry’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

By exploring innovative solutions like SAF and promoting collective action, the industry is taking steps towards a more sustainable future.

The ICAO Finvest Hub is expected to play a crucial role in supporting sustainable aviation initiatives, and African States are poised to lead the way in SAF production.
