Banking on Health: Ecobank and Jubilee Insurance Are Changing How Ugandans Access Healthcare

Grace Muliisa, Managing Director, Ecobank Uganda

In Uganda, health insurance is still something many associate with the privileged few, a luxury service wrapped in paperwork, unfamiliar jargon, and hefty upfront payments. But a quiet shift is taking place. And leading that change is a new partnership between Ecobank Uganda and Jubilee Health Insurance.

On the surface, it might seem like an unlikely pairing: a commercial bank and a health insurer. But dig deeper, and it becomes clear that this partnership has the potential to transform how ordinary Ugandans think about, access, and afford healthcare.

At the heart of this collaboration is a shared belief: healthcare is not just a human right it’s a financial priority.

“We want to make health coverage a normal part of managing your money,” says Muliisa Grace, Managing Director of Ecobank Uganda. “This partnership makes it easier for Ugandans to protect their health while securing their financial future.”

This is where bancassurance comes in a model that allows banks to distribute insurance products to their clients. But Ecobank isn’t just acting as a middleman. It’s helping to reshape how insurance is delivered, embedding it into everyday financial services, and using its branch network and digital platforms to bring health insurance to people who might never have considered it before.

Picture this: you’re opening an account at Ecobank or checking your balance on the app, and you’re presented with a simple, affordable health plan for yourself or your family. No lengthy forms. No back-and-forths. Just a few taps or a quick conversation and you’re covered.

This convenience is powered by J-Force, Jubilee’s digital onboarding platform, which allows policy issuance, payments, and renewals to happen seamlessly. It’s insurance, redesigned for the mobile generation.

And accessibility isn’t just about technology it’s about affordability, too. Many Ugandans can’t afford to pay lump-sum premiums. Through this partnership, clients can pay in installments, or even explore micro-loans to cover their premiums. The idea is to ensure that no one has to choose between medical care and financial stability.

Jubilee Health Insurance’s Managing Director, Dan Musiime, puts it plainly: “Partnering with Ecobank allows us to meet people where they already are within their financial journeys. We’re not just providing health cover; we’re providing peace of mind.”

The timing couldn’t be more urgent. Although Uganda’s insurance sector recorded over UGX 179 billion in premiums in 2023, only 3.5% of Ugandans buy health insurance on their own. That gap represents millions of people one accident, diagnosis, or emergency away from financial disaster.

By joining forces, Ecobank and Jubilee are doing more than launching a product. They’re making a statement that protecting your health shouldn’t feel like a gamble. It should be part of everyday banking.

This partnership is a step toward that future. One where healthcare access is simplified, digitized, and demystified. Where your bank account becomes a gateway to well-being. And where financial tools serve not just profit but people.
