Mr. Ernest Rubondo, the Executive Director of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), has been honoured among the top five individuals making a Distinguished Individual Contribution to Africa’s energy industry at the prestigious 2025 Big Five Board Awards.

This recognition, bestowed upon him during the Africa Energies Summit in London on May 15, 2025, is a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication to the energy sector.

Who is Rubondo?

Ernest Rubondo is a Ugandan geologist and business executive, born in 1958. He holds a Master of Science degree in Petroleum Reservoir Geology from Imperial College London, which he completed in 1990.

Career Highlights:

Petroleum Authority of Uganda: Rubondo has been the Executive Director since 2016, overseeing the regulation and monitoring of Uganda’s petroleum sector.

Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development: He previously served as Director for Petroleum and Commissioner for Petroleum Exploration and Production Department.

Oil and Gas Expertise: Rubondo has nearly three decades of experience in Uganda’s oil and gas sector, playing a key role in shaping the country’s petroleum policies and negotiations with oil companies.

Notable Achievements:

Received the Global Pacific Award for Distinguished Contribution to the African Oil and Gas Industry in 2007.

Instrumental in formulating Uganda’s National Oil and Gas Policy, approved in 2008.

Contributed significantly to Uganda’s oil and gas sector growth, with projects like the Tilenga Project achieving significant milestones.
