Energy Convention 2025: UNOC Playing Transformative Role in Uganda’s Energy Landscape- Nabbanja

The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) is playing a pivotal role in transforming Uganda’s energy landscape, driving economic growth, and improving the lives of Ugandans.

According to Proscovia Nabbanja, UNOC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the company has made significant strides in the oil and gas sector, which is crucial for the country’s economic development.

Nabbanja made the remarks during the 10th Energy Convention held at the Serena Hotel Kampala on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, where she said the oil and gas sector is key in transforming not only the economy but also the lives of Ugandans, reason why it is now time to set the stage for a “Sustainable Energy Future” panel.

A Historic Shift

Nabbanja noted that the award of the Kasuruban block, spanning 1,285 square kilometres in Buliisa, Hoima, and Masindi districts, marks a historic shift for UNOC.

“As an upstream operator, UNOC has proven that Ugandans are capable developers, not just hosts of resources. This development is a testament to the country’s growing expertise in the oil and gas sector,” Nabbanja said during a panel discussion at the Convention.

Boosting Economic Resilience

She highlighted that UNOC has made significant progress in fuel importation, growing from handling 1 million litres in 2020 to over 2 billion litres by March 2025.

This development, according to Nabbanja, is boosting economic resilience, price stability, and national revenue.

Highlighting the transformations in Uganda’s energy sector, Nabbanja stressed that the company’s efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the country’s economy, improving the lives of Ugandans.

Infrastructure Projects

She revealed that UNOC is also driving several infrastructure projects, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), the Jinja Storage Terminal, and the Uganda Refinery.

“These projects are not just assets but drivers of long-term wealth and energy security,” she said, adding, “They will play a crucial role in ensuring Uganda’s energy security and driving economic growth.”

Sustainable Operations

Nabbanja explained that UNOC is committed to operating sustainably, putting the ecosystem into consideration. To achieve this, she said, the company has implemented strict impact assessments and innovative technologies like cluster drilling and solarisation.

She pointed out that zero gas flaring in protected areas has also been achieved through national leadership, demonstrating UNOC’s commitment to environmental protection.

Building a Sustainable Energy Future

Through UNOC and other stakeholders in the sector, Nabbanja revealed that Uganda is building an energy future that is sustainable, secure, and nationally led.

“The company’s efforts are expected to drive economic growth, improve energy security, and reduce poverty,” she emphasised, noting that “With a focus on sustainability and environmental protection, UNOC is setting a positive example for the oil and gas sector in Uganda.”

Nabbanja made it clear to the convention that UNOC’s transformative role in Uganda’s energy landscape is undeniable.

She pointed out that the company’s efforts are driving economic growth, improving energy security, and reducing poverty.

With a focus on sustainability and environmental protection, UNOC is therefore building a brighter future for Uganda’s energy sector.
