Equity Bank Uganda recently celebrated the graduation of its first cohort of Equity Leaders Program (ELP) scholars, who have successfully completed their 3-year University Bachelor’s degree programs. The ELP, an initiative under the Equity Group Foundation, aims to nurture academically gifted young leaders in Uganda.
Of the 122 scholars commissioned in 2022, 29 have now graduated, demonstrating the program’s focus on academic and leadership excellence. These graduates have already begun to contribute to various sectors, with some having gained valuable work experience at Equity Bank itself.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Gift Shoko, Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda, emphasized the program’s significance in driving socio-economic growth. “The graduating scholars exemplify our commitment to empowering young leaders to create meaningful change within their communities,” he stated.
The ELP provides scholars with comprehensive support, including leadership training, mentorship, and professional networking opportunities. It aims to equip them with the skills and knowledge to address Africa’s most pressing challenges.
“Education is the key to social and economic transformation,” added Shoko, highlighting the program’s commitment to nurturing resilient and visionary leaders.
Elizabeth Wahito, Acting Head of the Public Sector & Social Investment Unit at Equity Bank Uganda, emphasized the program’s focus on holistic development. “Equity’s commitment goes beyond financial empowerment,” she said. “It is about creating a lifelong network of peers for mentorship, inspiration, and shared opportunities.”
The ELP has already commissioned two additional cohorts in 2023 and 2024, with plans to induct a fourth cohort soon. The program includes a paid internship at Equity Bank, providing scholars with valuable hands-on experience.
This graduation ceremony underscores Equity Bank’s dedication to empowering Uganda’s youth through education, mentorship, and leadership development. By nurturing the next generation of leaders, Equity Bank aims to contribute significantly to Uganda’s social and economic progress.
