Uganda has reached a remarkable milestone in healthcare with the introduction of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy (MSCT).
Prof. Elly Karuhanga, a renowned lawyer and founding partner at Kampala Associated Advocates, became the first Ugandan to undergo this groundbreaking treatment at the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC).
The procedure was performed in the presence of top health officials, including Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health; Prof. Charles Ibingira, Chairperson of the JCRC Board; and Dr. Cissy Kityo, Executive Director of JCRC.

What is Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy?
Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy is an advanced treatment that leverages mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to repair damaged tissues and promote healing. MSCs, found in various parts of the body such as bone marrow, skin, and fat tissue, are capable of transforming into different cell types, including muscle and cartilage cells.
The therapy involves isolating MSCs from bone marrow, multiplying them in a lab, and then infusing them back into the patient’s bloodstream or spinal fluid. This process supports tissue repair, promotes myelin regeneration, and enhances immune system function.
Benefits and Potential Applications
Research suggests that MSCT offers numerous benefits, including:
Promoting myelin repair and enhancing immune system function
Protecting and repairing nerves from damage
Treating conditions such as autoimmune diseases, spinal cord injuries, and degenerative disorders
New Era for Ugandan Healthcare
The launch of MSCT in Uganda represents a significant leap forward in the country’s healthcare sector. With its potential to revolutionize treatment for various debilitating conditions, this cutting-edge therapy positions Uganda as a leader in medical innovation within East Africa.
The successful introduction of MSCT highlights Uganda’s commitment to advancing medical research and technology. As access to this innovative treatment expands, Ugandans can look forward to improved health outcomes and an enhanced quality of life.
