PAU Championing Job Creation Through Skilling Youths To Boost Economic Development

The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) is playing a vital role in championing job creation and boosting economic development in the country.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Ernest Rubondo, PAU has made significant strides in building a skilled local workforce for the oil and gas industry.

Job Creation Initiatives

PAU currently employs 15,169 employees, with 89% being Ugandans, including 4,773 from local communities.

This is a significant contribution to reducing unemployment rates in Uganda and is in fulfilment of the Authority’s objective of improving the livelihoods of people in communities within the Albertine graben.

Furthermore, PAU has invested over USD 26 million (approximately Shs 95 billion) in training over 14,000 Ugandans in key areas such as Health Safety and Environment (HSE), welding, civil engineering, and work readiness since 2017.

Projects Undertaken by PAU

Some notable projects undertaken by PAU to promote job creation and economic growth include:

The Tilenga, Kingfisher, and EACOP projects

These projects have created opportunities for Ugandans to participate in the oil and gas sector. Contracts worth USD 6 billion for over 40 work packages and contracts have been submitted by the licensees to PAU for approval.

The National Supplier Database (NSD)

PAU manages the NSD, which gives visibility to Ugandan companies and creates opportunities for joint ventures to improve capabilities.

National Oil and Gas Talent Register (NOGTR)

This register gives visibility to individuals with oil and gas-related skills, enhancing their chances of employment.

Contribution to Economic Growth

The oil and gas sector is expected to contribute significantly to Uganda’s economic growth. According to Uganda’s Vision 2040, the development of the country’s oil and gas resources is crucial for achieving economic growth. The sector is projected to generate revenue, create jobs, and stimulate economic activity.

The Petroleum Authority of Uganda is thus playing a crucial role in promoting job creation and economic growth in the country.

Through its various initiatives and projects, PAU is contributing to the development of a skilled local workforce and creating opportunities for Ugandans to participate in the oil and gas sector.
