
The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the livelihoods of project-affected Ugandans through agriculture.
During a quarterly engagement meeting with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and private sector players in Kampala, the PAU shared valuable insights on the country’s oil and gas sector and highlighted the progress made to date.
Representing the PAU at the meeting were Mr. Didas Muhumuza, Senior Officer, Stakeholder Management, and Mr. Polycarp Musinguzi, Senior Social Affairs Officer.
They provided updates on the latest developments in the oil and gas sector, including the ongoing activities, challenges, and future plans, plus how to improve the livelihoods of project-affected people through agriculture.
Livelihood Improvement and Agriculture Development
The PAU and TotalEnergies Uganda emphasized their commitment to ensuring that the oil and gas developments benefit local communities and contribute to sustainable development.
According to Musinguzi, the PAU is committed to achieving livelihood improvement and agriculture development in areas of operation through several initiatives among them the following;
Agricultural Improvement Services
PAU provides training and support to local farmers to improve their agricultural practices, increase productivity, and enhance their livelihoods.
Livestock Development Programs Musinguzi noted that initiatives by PAU like the provision of 5,000 chicks to project-affected persons are helping improve livestock production and provide a sustainable source of income.
Empowering Women and Youth
He revealed that PAU also provides skills training in fields like tailoring, hospitality, and agriculture to empower women and youth, enabling them to support themselves and their families economically.
Scholarships
By offering scholarships to women and youth in areas of operation, PAU is providing project-affected people with access to education and better job opportunities, hence contributing to their overall livelihood improvement.
Resettlement and Compensation
He emphasized that PAU is also ensuring that project-affected persons receive fair compensation for their land and properties, which has enabled many of them to maintain their livelihoods and standards of living.
Resettlement Programs
PAU is working actively with local communities to develop resettlement programs that provide adequate housing, infrastructure, and social services, minimizing the impact of displacement.
Collaboration and Partnerships
Through collaborating with local organizations, NGOs, and community groups PAU is endeavouring to understand the needs of local communities so as to develop targeted initiatives to support their livelihoods.
Stakeholder Engagement
Regular engagement with stakeholders, including local communities, NGOs, and private sector players has ensured that PAU’s initiatives are responsive to the needs of local communities and contribute to sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to continuous engagement and collaboration among stakeholders.
