Roofings, a leading manufacturer of steel products in Uganda, is playing a vital role in contributing to the country’s economic growth.
With its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and commitment to quality, Roofings, which is under the proprietorship of Sikander Lalani, is not only providing employment opportunities but also supporting the construction and infrastructure development sectors.
It is for this reason that the state minister for Mineral, Phiona Nyamutoro, contends that Roofings is not only contributing to economic growth but is also one of the country’s potential clients for the oil and gas sector.
Nyamutoro made the revelation during a tour of the new Roofings Plant in Namanve Industrial Park, where she observed that with value addition of 54%, there is significant progress on a more mechanised plant in construction and a plan for a phase 6 DRI (Directly Responsible Individuals) plant too that should make them realise 100% value addition.

“I was particularly amazed that Roofings uses much more LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) than all that is imported by our fuel stations, an indicator of readily available consumption when oil production starts,” Nyamutoro said.
“It is also commendable to say their environmentally friendly and health safety mechanisms should be emulated by other companies,” she added.
The Minister also observed that since the company is currently importing all their raw materials, it has a great need to start mining in Uganda for the value chain to be more feasible and to realign with the country’s national priorities.
Contribution to Economic Growth
Roofings’ contribution to Uganda’s economic growth can be seen in several areas:
Job Creation
Roofings is providing employment opportunities to hundreds of Ugandans, both directly and indirectly. This has helped to reduce unemployment rates and increase disposable income.
Local Content
By manufacturing steel products locally, Roofings is reducing Uganda’s reliance on imports. This has helped to conserve foreign exchange and promote local economic growth.
Infrastructure Development
Roofings’ products are being used in various infrastructure development projects, including construction of buildings, bridges, and roads. This has helped to improve Uganda’s infrastructure and promote economic growth.
Potential Customer for the Oil and Gas Sector
Roofings is also a potential customer for Uganda’s oil and gas sector. As the sector develops, Roofings’ products will be required for the construction of infrastructure, including pipelines, storage facilities, and refineries.
This presents a significant opportunity for Roofings to supply its products to the oil and gas sector, further contributing to Uganda’s economic growth.
Benefits of Local Procurement
The oil and gas sector’s procurement of Roofings‘ products will have several benefits for Uganda’s economy, including:
Increased Local Content
By procuring products from local manufacturers like Roofings, the oil and gas sector will increase local content and promote economic growth.
Job Creation
The increased demand for Roofings’ products will lead to the creation of more jobs, both directly and indirectly.
Reduced Import Bill
By procuring products locally, the oil and gas sector will reduce its import bill, conserving foreign exchange and promoting local economic growth.
Roofings is thus playing a vital role in contributing to Uganda’s economic growth.
Its commitment to quality and local content has made it a leader in the steel manufacturing sector.
As the oil and gas sector develops, Roofings is well-positioned to supply its products and further contribute to Uganda’s economic growth.
The benefits of local procurement, including increased local content, job creation, and reduced import bill, make Roofings a potential customer for the oil and gas sector.
