Uganda’s White Gold: Historic Milk Exports to Algeria Unveil New Era for Dairy Industry

Uganda’s thriving dairy industry is celebrating a momentous breakthrough, poised for an extraordinary transformation following Algeria’s pivotal decision to import Ugandan milk. This landmark development signals a new chapter of prosperity and growth for a sector vital to the nation’s economy.

The first consignment of milk from Brookside Dairy, destined for Algeria, was flagged off by H.E. President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

The shipment, consisting of 500 tonnes of whole powdered milk, marks the beginning of a new era in dairy sector collaboration between Uganda and Algeria.

“During my visit to Algeria in March 2023, I had good discussions with His Excellency President Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding Algeria’s interest in importing milk from Uganda,” President Museveni said during the flag-off.

“I am, therefore, happy to see the first shipment of whole powdered milk, starting with an initial batch of 500 tonnes,” he added.

The flag-off event was attended by a team from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) led by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister for Agriculture.

According to Minister Tumwebaze, this is a direct result of President Museveni’s state visit to Algeria in March 2023, during which he negotiated the export of milk from Uganda to Algeria. As such, this development is expected to open up new markets for Ugandan dairy farmers, increasing their income and improving their livelihoods.

Uganda’s Dairy Industry: A Growing Sector

Uganda’s dairy industry has been growing steadily over the years, with the sub-sector contributing significantly to the country’s economy.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the industry is estimated to be worth over UGX 1.4 trillion (approximately USD 400 million) and employs over 1.5 million people, with the majority being smallholder farmers.

Uganda’s dairy production currently stands at around 2.4 billion litres annually, with a growing demand for dairy products both locally and regionally.

Driving Uganda’s Economy

The export of milk to Algeria is expected to contribute significantly to Uganda’s economy. The dairy industry is a key sector in Uganda, providing employment and income for thousands of people, who in turn pay taxes. The diary processing industry is also booming in Uganda and is another key source of tax revenue for the government.

With the new market in Algeria, the industry is poised for growth, which will have a positive impact on the country’s GDP.

A Boost to the Dairy Industry

The exportation of milk to Algeria marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s dairy industry. The industry is expected to benefit from increased investment, improved infrastructure, and enhanced capacity building.

With the support of the government and the opening of new markets, the industry is poised for growth, which will contribute to driving Uganda’s economy forward.

As the first consignment of milk heads to Algeria, the future looks bright for Uganda’s dairy farmers and the country’s economy.
