Apiculture, or beekeeping, has emerged as a highly profitable sector in Uganda, driven by the growing demand for honey and its byproducts.
Mountains of the Moon University, in collaboration with Coöperatie Leren voor Morgen and other partners like Caritas Foundation-Kasese and Bunyangabu Beekeepers Cooperative, today organised a workshop to equip students, farmers, and staff with the skills necessary for sustainable and profitable beekeeping.
The workshop which was facilitated by Clovis Kabaseke, a lecturer and researcher at the University, and Peiter Temminck of Zone.college, aimed at exploring collaboration in entrepreneurship, agriculture, and sustainable development, all rooted in achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through global academic partnerships.
The Potential of Apiculture in Uganda
It was observed during the workshop that Uganda possesses great potential to earn revenue from apiculture because of the following reasons;
High Demand for Honey
Honey is in high demand both locally and internationally, providing a lucrative market for Ugandan beekeepers.
Byproducts of Honey
Beekeeping also produces other valuable products, such as beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly, which have various applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food industries.
Sustainable Livelihoods
Apiculture can provide a sustainable source of income for rural communities, promoting economic development and poverty reduction.
International Markets for Honey
Besides the local demand, however, apiculture also has the potential to tap into international markets because of;
Global Demand
The global honey market is growing, driven by increasing demand for natural and organic products.
Export Opportunities
Uganda has the potential to tap into international markets, including the European Union, United States, and Middle East, where demand for high-quality honey is on the rise.
Competitive Advantage
Ugandan honey is known for its high quality and unique flavor profiles, providing a competitive advantage in international markets.
Benefits of Apiculture for Ugandan Beekeepers
Apiculture is a profitable agricultural activity that can potential transform the livelihoods of those engaging in it because;
Increased Income
Apiculture can provide a significant source of income for beekeepers, improving their livelihoods and economic stability.
Job Creation
The apiculture industry has the potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in rural areas.
Environmental Benefits
Beekeeping promotes pollination, biodiversity, and ecosystem health, contributing to environmental sustainability.
Empowering Beekeepers through Education and Training
Skills Development
The workshop, organised by Mountains of the Moon University, aimed to equip students, farmers, and staff with the skills necessary for sustainable and profitable beekeeping.
Modern Beekeeping Practices
