African Development Bank Group Gets New President: Sidi Ould Tah Takes Over from Dr. Adesina

The African Development Bank Group has a new president, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, who was elected by the Bank’s Board of Governors on May 29, 2025.

Dr. Tah will assume office on September 1, 2025, for a five-year term, succeeding Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, whose second mandate will come to an end.

The African Union Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, congratulated Dr. Tah on his election as the 9th President of the AfDB Group, saying that Dr. Tah’s election is a testament to his exceptional leadership and commitment to advancing Africa’s development agenda.

H.E. Youssouf reaffirms the AU’s full support for the Bank and expresses confidence in Dr. Tah’s ability to respond effectively to the continent’s most pressing challenges, from debt sustainability and food security to climate resilience and digital innovation,” a congratulatory message from the AU reads in part.

The Chairperson also paid tribute to H.E. Adesina, the outgoing President, acknowledging his exemplary leadership and many achievements during his tenure. He wished Dr. Adesina continued success in his future endeavours.

With Dr. Tah’s election, the African Development Bank Group is set to benefit from his vast experience and exceptional leadership.
