Baggage Delays at Entebbe International Airport: A Threat to Trade and Economic Growth

The Uganda National Traders Alliance (UNATA) has raised concerns about the growing frustrations faced by traders importing goods through Entebbe International Airport.

This was revealed today during a meeting between UNATA and airport transporters to discuss the growing frustrations over delays and high costs faced by traders importing goods through Entebbe International Airport.

According to UNATA members led by Katongole Godfrey, their president, the delays in clearing goods, high customs charges, and unofficial imposters demanding bribes have become major bottlenecks, affecting trade and economic growth in the country.

Through this meeting, Katongole revealed that many of the transporters no longer carry out business as usual at the airport due to the delays while clearing their goods

Impact on Trade and Economic Growth

He stated that the delays in baggage at Entebbe International Airport have severe consequences for trade and economic growth in Uganda. Some of the effects include:

Increased Costs

High customs charges and unofficial payments demanded by imposters increase the cost of doing business, making it challenging for traders to remain competitive.

Delayed Clearance

Delays in clearing goods can take up to two months, affecting the supply chain and leading to stockouts, lost sales, and revenue.

Reduced Tax Revenue

If traders are unable to clear their goods due to high costs and delays, it can lead to reduced tax revenue for the government, which in the long run affects economic growth.

Loss of Business Confidence

The frustrations faced by traders can lead to a loss of business confidence, discouraging investment and hindering economic growth.

Concerns Raised by Traders

The UNATA members highlighted several concerns during the meeting, including:

Lack of Clear Communication

They noted that traders have complained about the lack of clear communication from airport officials regarding the reasons for delays.

High Customs Charges

The traders also complained about high customs charges, which they said are a major concern, particularly at airports.

Unofficial URA Imposters

Traders also raised the concern of veiled Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) imposters who demand money from them before clearing their merchandise, urging the commissioner, John Musinguzi Rujoki, to intervene.

Call to Action

The business community thus called on the government to address the issues faced by traders, citing their significant contribution to tax revenue.

As the country prepares for the financial year budget, therefore, the government needs to reconsider the challenges faced by traders and take concrete steps to address them.

The delays in baggage at Entebbe International Airport are a significant threat to trade and economic growth in Uganda.

The government must take immediate action to address the concerns raised by traders, including reducing customs charges, improving communication, and eliminating unofficial imposters.

This is because by doing so, the government can create a more favourable business environment, increase tax revenue, and promote economic growth.
