Brand Africa Awards 2023: Mukwano, Centenary Bank & NBS TV Remain Uganda’s Leading Most Admired Brands

Mukwano Industries, Centenary Bank and NBS TV  have retained the No.#1 position as the most admired Ugandan brands in Uganda, while MTN, Coca-Cola and Stanbic Bank are the leading non-Ugandan brands.

This was revealed on Tuesday July 11, 2023 during the 13th edition of the Brand Africa Awards 100, at a ceremony held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Kampala, at which Hon. David Bahati, the Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, was Guest of Honour.

 The list of winners was presented by Thebe Ikalafeng, the Chairman Brand Africa, during the event that was hosted by Publics Africa.

The  awards were based on a survey and rankings conducted by Geopoll, Kantar and Brand Leadership in Uganda, as part of the pan-Africa research across 32 African countries that account for more than 85% of the continent’s GDP and population.

Highlights From Awards

The following observations were highlighted from the above mentioned survey;

Overall, African brands share of the Top 100 most admired brands has dropped 20% from a 10-year high of 17% to 14% share of the Top 100 most admired brands in Africa, as stalwart African brands, MTN dropped out of the Top 10, and all African brands lost ground, except Zambia’s Trade Kings, the highest African mover and new at No.#38.

Nike is the No.# 1 most admired brand for the 6th consecutive year and MTN is the No.# 1 most admired African brand in the Top 100 brands recalled spontaneously; Dangote has retaken the lead as the No.#1 most admired brand when respondents are prompted to recall an African brand specifically; DSTV is the most admired media brand and Standard Bank is the No.# 1 most admired financial services brand.

Europe, led by Adidas at No.#2, has grown its share of the most admired brands in Africa to 37%, ahead of North America at 32% led by Nike, the No.#1 brand for the 5th consecutive year, and Asia which retains its 17% share led by Samsung, the No.#3 brand for the 3rd consecutive year.

Ugandan Perspective

In Uganda, overall, the leading brands have retained their rankings:

Mukwano is the No.# 1 most admired Ugandan brand and Coca Cola the No.# 1 most admired non-Ugandan brand overall, recalled spontaneously;

MTN and Mukwano led the rankings for the most admired African brands and the brands symbolising African pride in Uganda.

In category specific rankings, Centenary Bank and Stanbic are the most admired Ugandan and non-Ugandan financial services brands, and NBS and NTV are the most admired Ugandan and non-Ugandan media brands;

In a new category to recognise brands that are doing good for people, society and the environment, inspired by businesses shifting from profit to purpose, United Nations, Centenary Bank and MTN emerged as the No.#1 NGO, No.#1 Ugandan and No.#1 non-Ugandan brands respectively.

Backdrop

It should be noted that the Brand Africa 100, Africa’s Best Brands research, took place between February and April and covered 32 countries across all economic regions in the continent.

The 2023/24 research is once again being conducted by Brand Africa partners, Geopoll which covered sub-Sahara Africa, while Analysis, a Kantar affiliate in Mauritius covered the sub-Sahara Islands, and Morocco’s Integrate, an affiliate of Kantar covered North Africa. Kantar and Brand Leadership produced the rankings, while the Brand Africa Scientific Committee convened to review, analyse and validate the results.

To ensure the objectivity and independence of the rankings, the Brand Africa 100 | Africa’s Best Brands research is not funded by any brand.
