In a powerful declaration that will reshape the country’s digital landscape, MTN Uganda has unveiled its strategic evolution from a traditional telecommunications provider to a fully-fledged TechCo.
This bold transformation, unveiled by Ibrahim Senyonga, MTN Uganda’s General Manager for Enterprise Business Unit, at the recently concluded National ICT Summit in Nakawa, positions the company as a key enabler of Uganda’s ambitious economic growth sectors.
Speaking to a gathering of national and global thought leaders under the theme “Infrastructure for Transformation,” Senyonga emphasised that MTN’s “Ambition 2025” strategy is meticulously designed to build the digital backbone for Uganda’s future.
“MTN is no longer just a telco, we’re a TechCo,” Senyonga stated, highlighting a shift that prioritises advanced technological solutions to drive national development.
Propelling Uganda’s Key Economic Pillars
Senyonga revealed that under its “TechCo” vision, MTN is strategically investing in cutting-edge digital infrastructure and services to specifically support Uganda’s Agriculture, Tourism, Manufacturing, and Services (ATMS) sectors in the following ways:
Agriculture (AgriTech)
By leveraging advancements in cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT), MTN aims to empower farmers with smart solutions for precision agriculture, supply chain optimisation, and market access, thereby transforming traditional farming into a digitally driven, efficient industry.
Tourism (Smart Tourism)
According to Senyonga, the deployment of robust connectivity, including Wi-Fi-enabled transport systems, will enhance the experience for visitors and enable digital innovation in booking, navigation, and services, catalysing the growth of Uganda’s vibrant tourism sector.
Manufacturing (Industry 4.0 Readiness)
MTN’s focus on cloud solutions, IoT, and advanced security frameworks will enable manufacturers to adopt smart factory principles, optimise production lines, and secure their digital operations, driving efficiency and competitiveness in the manufacturing landscape.
Services (Digital Services Economy)
By providing a comprehensive digital backbone, MTN underpins the rapid expansion of various service industries, fostering innovation, enhancing digital transactions, and improving overall service delivery across the economy.
Building the Digital Foundation
The practical manifestation of MTN’s “TechCo” commitment is evident in its pursuit of advanced infrastructure.
Senyonga revealed that from widespread rural 4G expansion, bringing high-speed internet to previously underserved communities, to piloting 5G technology that promises ultra-fast connectivity for industrial and consumer applications, MTN is laying the groundwork for a truly connected Uganda.
This also includes developing connected supply chains to enhance efficiency and transparency for businesses nationwide.
Senyonga underscored the company’s dedication to ensuring that the benefits of this digital revolution are accessible to all.
It is important to note that MTN Uganda’s evolution into a “TechCo” signifies more than just a corporate rebranding.
It represents a fundamental recalibration of its strategic purpose: to be an active, integral partner in Uganda’s digital transformation journey.
By providing the essential digital infrastructure, fostering innovation, and directly supporting the nation’s core economic sectors, MTN Uganda is not merely adapting to the future; it is actively building it, ensuring a connected and prosperous future for every Ugandan.
