Purpose-Driven Marketing: How Absa Bank Uganda’s MCX Team Won Global Recognition

Absa Bank Uganda shone brightly on the global stage, earning top recognition at the inaugural Absa Group CEO Pinnacle Awards in Johannesburg, South Africa, held over the weekend.

The awards, hosted by Absa Group CEO Kenny Fihla, celebrated the best of the best across the continent. This recognition is not just an acknowledgement of business success but a powerful testament to a new philosophy that marketing is a strategic tool for creating value for customers, communities, and the business itself.

Marketing Beyond the Bottom Line

Over the past two years, Absa Bank Uganda’s Marketing and Customer Experience (MCX) team has consistently demonstrated that marketing is more than just a business expense. According to Hellen Basuuta Nangozi, the Marketing and Customer Experience Director at Absa Bank Uganda, their approach has centered on a deliberate strategy of being a “force for good in the communities within which we operate.” This is evidenced by a range of purpose-led campaigns and initiatives.

For instance, the bank’s sponsorships and partnerships have been strategically aligned with national development priorities, supporting sectors like sports and education.

Nangozi asserts that through financial literacy programs, Absa has empowered countless individuals and small businesses with the knowledge to make informed financial decisions.

She notes that, “This shift from purely transactional marketing to a model that creates shared value has been a key differentiator and a core reason for the team’s success.”

This approach, Nangonzi contends, not only builds brand loyalty and customer trust but also makes a tangible contribution to community well-being, ultimately translating to a healthier bottom line.

A Testament to Teamwork and Innovation

This award is a direct result of the relentless dedication and innovative spirit of every member of the Absa Bank Uganda MCX team.

As Nangozi reiterates, “It validates their hard work and commitment to a vision that prioritises the customer experience at every touchpoint.”

The team’s success was made possible by a unified effort across the organisation, particularly the Absa Group Marketing and Corporate Affairs team led by Sydney Nhlanhla Mbhele, the Regional Team led by Rick de Kock, and the country leadership team led by David A. Wandera.

Their sponsorship and vote of confidence provided the critical support needed to bring this vision to life.

For the Absa Bank Uganda team, this recognition is fuel for their journey ahead.

It reinforces their commitment to finding new and innovative ways to empower and serve their clients and communities, solidifying their position as a purpose-led financial institution in Uganda and across the continent.
