Sustainability is Key to Business Resilience and Community Development- UBL’s Kilonzo

The 4th Annual Labour and Employment Law Conference held recently at Msetil Hotel, in Kampala, provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss crucial topics, including sustainability.

Andrew Kilonzo, the Managing Director, Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), revealed during the conference that sustainability at UBL is not just a buzzword but a core aspect of the company’s business strategy.

“By prioritising sustainability, the company aims to strengthen its environment and society’s resilience while minimising risks to its core business,” Kilonzo said.

“Having sustainability in mind at Uganda Breweries Limited allows us to effectively strengthen our environment and society’s resilience while de-risking the core of our business,” he added.

He stressed that we should all continue being connected in celebration rather than tragedy,  hence the need to work together to achieve the planet we desire.

Importance of Sustainability

Kilonzo explained that the challenges posed by climate change, water scarcity, and social inequalities are real and impact everyone, noting that as such, UBL recognises the need for collective action to achieve a desirable planet.

“By working together, businesses can mitigate the risks associated with these challenges and create a better future,” he observed.

Holistic Approach to Sustainability

To achieve this, he said UBL has since embedded sustainability across every function through:

Partner farmers: Over 35,000 farmers are involved in sustainable agricultural practices

EcoChamps: Employees driving change through environmental initiatives

Spirited Women: Empowering women to drive progress

STEM programs: Promoting science, technology, engineering, and math education

Community initiatives: He pointed out that UBL is operating a three-year water project worth Shs1 billion, benefiting 8,000 people in water-stressed areas

Collaboration and Partnerships

He revealed that the company’s approach to sustainability is supported by six strategic pillars, including deep stakeholder engagement and partnerships with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) and Sightsavers, a non-governmental organisation (NGO)

These partnerships, according to Kilonzo, amplify the company’s impact and help achieve the Diageo Society 2030 goals.

Value of Sustainability

Kilonzo made it clear to the conference that sustainability has great value for both the balance sheet and the broader community.

Giving an example of UBL, Kilonzo stated that by prioritising sustainability, the company is not only ensuring its business resilience but also contributing to community development.

UBL’s commitment to sustainability is a testament to the company’s dedication to responsible business practices.

And, reiterating Kilonzo’s remarks, by working together and prioritising sustainability, businesses can create a better future for all.
