How Glovo’s Gig Economy is Fueling Uganda’s Socio-Economic Transformation Among Youth

In Uganda, where youth unemployment remains a significant challenge and access to education is often precarious, the growing gig economy is proving to be a powerful vehicle for socio-economic transformation.

Companies like Glovo Uganda, under the leadership of Ivy Maingi as Country Director, are not merely offering delivery services; they are providing structured opportunities that fuel independence, build essential skills, and create pathways to professional careers for young people.

This impact is best illustrated by the journey of individuals like Anxious Nkamwijuka, a 22-year-old  student of social justice at Kyambogo University. Faced with the immediate prospect of dropping out due to financial constraints, his discovery of the Glovo platform was a vital lifeline that transformed his uncertainty into a self-sufficient future.

From Dependency to Independence

For Anxious, the immediate benefit of joining Glovo was financial stability. After noticing the opportunity presented by delivery riders and leveraging his own scooter, he quickly secured a reliable income. This income was crucial, covering his rent and personal expenses, and allowing him to continue his education.

He summarises the profound impact of this shift, saying, “For me, it was more than just a job, it was the vehicle that carried me from dependency to independence, from uncertainty to a future I can build for myself.”

Beyond the immediate financial relief, the work has fostered deep personal growth, which he describes as a transition “from childhood to manhood,” instilling a deep sense of responsibility and entrepreneurial spirit. He has since upgraded his motorcycle and become a community influencer, inspiring 11 people in his circle to join the platform, highlighting the ripple effect of the opportunity.

The Glovo Academy Advantage

According to Anxious, what truly differentiates this opportunity is Glovo’s commitment to long-term professional development, largely facilitated through the Glovo Academy.

Anxious, who dreams of becoming a “marketing guru,” is leveraging this free online learning platform to bridge the gap between his current social justice studies and his career aspirations.

The Academy offers access to over 350 courses in high-demand areas, including digital marketing, communication, and personal effectiveness.

Anxious, enthusiastically notes, “Glovo is investing in my future. The courses are preparing me for the career I actually want.”

He is one of 571 couriers in Africa who have collectively completed over 2,670 courses, turning daily delivery routes into a definitive road map toward their ultimate career goals.

Building Skills and Social Capital

The gig work has served as an invaluable professional school, instilling practical skills essential for success in any career through empowering youth with the following skills;

Time Management

Balancing a university day program with afternoon and evening delivery shifts has taught Anxious discipline and effective time management.

Communication

He attributes his success and generous tips to his proactive communication strategy, like calling customers before setting off to ensure a smooth handover and build rapport.

Social Capital

He views the network of fellow riders, restaurant staff, and customers he has built as highly valuable, terming it his “social capital.”

A Framework of Support

To ensure riders can operate effectively, Glovo implements “The Couriers’ Pledge,” a global initiative that provides a critical safety net. This includes essential support such as Free Accident Insurance and Access to Safety Gear

This structured framework allows riders to navigate the city’s streets with confidence, secure in the knowledge that their well-being is a priority.

Anxious, now an advocate for his peers, acknowledges the recent pay increase for late-night deliveries but also maintains a clear vision for continuous improvement, suggesting the provision of rain gear and a system for long-term bike ownership to enhance loyalty and security.

His message to other young people is direct: “The more effort you put in, the more you earn. It is a platform that empowers you.”

Glovo is not just facilitating deliveries; it is actively transforming youth from dependency into independence, making the gig economy a crucial engine for Uganda’s youth-driven socio-economic growth.
