MTN MoMo Leadership Meets Bank of Uganda to Accelerate Digital Inclusion

The leadership team from MTN Mobile Money Uganda (MTN MoMo), headed by the CEO Richard Yego, conducted a high-level courtesy visit with the Governor of the Bank of Uganda (BoU), Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, on Friday.

The strategic engagement focused on strengthening cooperation between the private sector and the regulator to rapidly accelerate digital financial inclusion across Uganda.

The MTN MoMo delegation included key figures such as Sylvia Mulinge, CEO – MTN Uganda, Dennis Kakonge, GM Corporate Services, Stephen Mutana, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, and Samuel Gitta, GM Risk and Compliance at MTN Uganda, signaling the holistic, group-wide importance of regulatory alignment and risk compliance.

The meeting underscored MTN MoMo’s commitment to providing safe, accessible, and innovative digital financial solutions that contribute to the financial health and empowerment of every Ugandan.

Safety, Accessibility, and Innovation

According to Yego, the discussions were centered on three critical areas essential for expanding Uganda’s digital financial ecosystem:

Accelerating Digital Financial Inclusion: He noted that this can be achieved through exploring joint strategies to bring the unbanked and underbanked population into the formal financial sector using mobile money technology.

Cooperation on Public-Private Initiatives: Through fostering a closer working relationship with the regulator (BoU) on initiatives that promote both financial sector stability and technological innovation.

Safe and Accessible Solutions: Reviewing how MTN MoMo continues to deploy digital financial products that meet the highest standards of security, accessibility, and reliability for its millions of users.

Commitment to a Secure Digital Ecosystem

In reaffirming its commitment, the MTN MoMo leadership emphasised their unwavering commitment to working with all stakeholders toward a secure, inclusive, and digitally empowered financial ecosystem.

The core conviction driving MTN MoMo is that true progress requires collective effort.

“Together, we can collectively redesign the future of finance in Uganda in a way that creates opportunities that uplift and enhance the financial health of every Ugandan,” Yego emphasised.

He observed that this strategic partnership is vital as Uganda continues to leverage mobile money technology, a significant driver of economic activity and financial access, to meet the ambitious goals of its national development plans.

The collaboration between MTN MoMo, as a leading digital financial service provider, and the BoU, as the sector’s regulator, is thus crucial for building the necessary trust and regulatory certainty required for the next phase of digital finance growth.
