MTN Uganda restores services, announces customer support following network outage

MTN Uganda has confirmed that all services have been fully restored following the service interruption experienced on Sunday, 5 July 2026, attributing the outage to a power disruption at one of its data centres.

The interruption temporarily affected voice, data and Mobile Money services, disrupting communication, digital transactions and business operations for customers across the country. The company said its technical teams successfully restored all affected services and confirmed that customer data remained secure throughout the incident, while Mobile Money balances were never at risk.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, MTN Uganda apologised to customers, businesses, agents, merchants and partners for the inconvenience caused, acknowledging the impact the outage had on individuals and organisations that rely on its network every day.

The telecommunications operator also announced that subscribers whose voice or data bundles expired unused during the interruption will receive compensation in line with its customer care processes and applicable regulatory requirements. The company said it is engaging both the Uganda Communications Commission and the Bank of Uganda and will communicate any additional customer support measures through its official channels.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience this caused to the customers, businesses, agents, merchants and partners who depend on our services every day. To every customer who was affected, we sincerely apologise. We also recognise the wider public concern the interruption gave rise to, and are addressing it with openness, accountability and a long-term commitment to improved service delivery,” the company said.

MTN Uganda has also initiated a review of the incident to identify lessons, strengthen network resilience and reduce the likelihood of similar disruptions in the future.

The company said the outage has reinforced the importance of continued investment in network reliability as Uganda’s economy becomes increasingly dependent on digital connectivity. Beyond restoring services, MTN Uganda reaffirmed its long-term commitment to building resilient telecommunications infrastructure capable of supporting the country’s growing digital needs.

That commitment is reflected in the company’s continued investment in Uganda over the past 27 years. Today, MTN Uganda serves more than 24.4 million subscribers, directly employs over 675 Ugandans and works with thousands of local partners across the country.

In 2025 alone, the company invested Ush 549.4 billion in expanding and strengthening its network, increasing 4G population coverage to 88.6 percent and 3G coverage to 96.2 percent while continuing the rollout of 5G services to more communities.

Its financial technology platform, MTN MoMo, now supports 14.7 million active customers, more than 241,000 mobile money agents and over 114,000 merchants, underscoring the growing importance of reliable digital infrastructure to Uganda’s financial ecosystem.

The incident also highlights the increasingly strategic role telecommunications networks play in Uganda’s economy. As more citizens, businesses and public institutions rely on digital services for communication, commerce and financial transactions, network resilience has become as important as network expansion.

For MTN Uganda, the immediate priority has been restoring services and supporting affected customers. Looking ahead, the company’s focus will be on strengthening operational resilience while continuing to invest in the infrastructure that underpins Uganda’s digital transformation.

As the company concluded in its statement, its long-term commitment remains unchanged: Uganda is Home.
