Centenary Bank, MTN Uganda Contribute Shs435M Towards Completion of Nkozi Hospital Trauma Centre

In a powerful display of corporate social responsibility and community solidarity, Centenary Bank and MTN Uganda have today presented a collective cheque of Shs435 million to the Buganda Kingdom.

The donation is earmarked for the completion of the long-awaited Accident and Trauma Centre at Nkozi Hospital, a critical healthcare project located along the accident-prone Kampala-Masaka highway.

The presentation took place at Bulange, Mengo, where the funds were handed over to the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, following the high-profile Kalisoliso Dinner fundraiser held on October 3, 2025.

During the presentation of the cheque, Beatrice Lugalambi, Centenary Bank’s General Manager for Corporate Communications and Marketing, emphasised that the bank’s involvement goes beyond financial figures.

“We are honoured to stand with the Buganda Kingdom and its partners in championing initiatives that uplift healthcare. Standing together to support Nkozi Hospital is about ensuring that no life is lost simply because specialised care was too far away,” Ms. Lugalambi said.

The Katikkiro commended the partners for their consistency, noting that the spirit of ‘Bulungi Bwansi’ (working for the common good) is what has kept the Nkozi project moving forward since its inception in 2016.

Owek. Katikkiro Mayiga hailed MTN Uganda and Centenary Bank for this great gesture of contributing towards the well-being of Ugandans and urged everyone to enjoy responsibly during the festive season.

“This initiative isn’t just about giving; it’s about safeguarding lives, building hope, and serving our communities,” the Katikkiro noted.

Breaking Down the Contribution

The total contribution of Shs435 million represents a multi-year commitment from two of Uganda’s largest corporate citizens:

Centenary Bank committed a total of Shs280 million. This includes an immediate disbursement of Shs80 million for the current year, with an additional Shs200 million pledged over the next two years.

MTN Uganda provided the remaining Shs155 million (as part of a broader Shs520 million commitment to Buganda Kingdom initiatives), reinforcing its ‘Labuka-Tofiira ku Kubo’ safety campaign.

Why Nkozi Hospital?

Located 82km along the Kampala-Masaka Road, Nkozi Hospital has historically been the primary responder to road traffic accidents on one of Uganda’s busiest and most dangerous highways. However, for years, the facility lacked a dedicated unit to handle complex trauma cases, often forcing victims to endure long, life-threatening journeys back to Kampala for emergency surgery.

The new Accident and Trauma Centre is designed to provide:

Immediate Emergency Surgery: Reducing the ‘Golden Hour’ response time for accident victims.

Specialised Intensive Care: Equipped to handle severe head injuries and multiple fractures.

Community Resilience: Providing better diagnostic and inpatient services for the Mawokota South region.

The Road Ahead and Kalisoliso 2026

While the Shs435 million provides a massive boost toward the structural completion of the ward, additional resources will be needed for medical equipment and specialised staffing.

As the project enters its final phase, stakeholders are already looking toward the next major milestone: the Kalisoliso Dinner on September 11, 2026.

This event is expected to serve as a final push to ensure the facility is fully operational and equipped to start saving lives.
