MTN Rwanda CEO Monzer and Team Honour Memories of Genocide Victims

The staff and management of MTN Rwanda and MoMo, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Monzer Ali, convened at the Gisozi Genocide Memorial on Monday to pay their respects to the lives lost during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The commemoration, which marked the beginning of Kwibuka 31, was a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded in Rwanda over 30 years ago.

It should be noted that April 7 every year marks the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, also known as Kwibuka.

The start of Kwibuka 31, the 31st anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, was marked at the Kigali Genocide Memorial as the President Paul Kagame, and First Lady, Jeanette Kagame, lit the flame of remembrance which will burn for the next 100 days, recalling the 100 days in 1994 in which a million people were murdered.

The event aims to remind the world of the beginning of the genocide perpetrated against members of the Tutsi minority by the Hutu extremist-led government.

Within just over 100 days, as many as 1 million Tutsi were systematically murdered. Moderate Hutu and others who opposed the massacres were also killed during this period.

Remembering the Past, Building the Future

As the world reflects on the genocide during Kwibuka 31, MTN Rwanda renews its commitment to fostering unity, resilience, and hope for a brighter future.

The company’s participation in the commemoration is a testament to its dedication to promoting a culture of remembrance and respect for the victims of the genocide.

International Recognition

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) organised a commemorative ceremony in partnership with the Permanent Delegation of Rwanda to UNESCO, highlighting the international community’s recognition of the significance of this event.

MTN Rwanda’s participation in the Kwibuka 31 commemoration is a meaningful way to honour the memories of the victims of the genocide.

As the company renews its commitment to fostering unity, resilience, and hope, it sets an example for others to follow.

By remembering the past and working towards a brighter future, MTN Rwanda is contributing to the ongoing efforts to build a more compassionate and inclusive society.
