World Population Day: Uganda to Unveil Initiatives for Inclusive Growth and Economic Development

Uganda is poised to join the global community in commemorating World Population Day (WPD) on Friday, July 11, 2025, with national celebrations scheduled at Busaana Town Council Grounds in Kayunga District.

Under the captivating theme, “Promoting Population Health and Well-being through the Parish Development Model (PDM),” this year’s observance underscores Uganda’s unwavering commitment to uplifting its most vulnerable households and accelerating national development from the grassroots.

According to Hon. Amos Lugolobi, the State Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development, the chosen theme directly aligns with the Government’s ambitious goal of transitioning the 33% of households still engaged in subsistence agriculture into the money economy.

“At the heart of this transformative agenda lies the Parish Development Model, conceptualised as the primary vehicle for delivering essential services and fostering inclusive development at the local level, ensuring that prosperity reaches every Ugandan,” Lugolobi said at a press conference in Kampala today.

Vision for Tenfold Growth

This year’s WPD theme is intricately linked with Uganda’s ambitious Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV).

NDP IV marks the first of three strategic plans designed to implement Uganda’s bold Tenfold Growth Strategy.

This overarching strategy aims to dramatically expand Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from USD 53.7 billion in Fiscal Year 2023/24 to a formidable USD 500 billion by 2040. The focus on population health and well-being through the PDM is recognised as a crucial foundation for achieving such unprecedented economic expansion.

Why Kayunga District for Official Celebrations?

As part of the nationwide commemorations, Kayunga District is buzzing with a series of comprehensive community-oriented activities designed to bring the theme to life and deliver tangible benefits to its residents. Some of the activities already underway include;

Regional Leaders’ Dialogue

On July 10, 2025, Katikomu Hotel will host a vital dialogue involving 17 local governments, fostering collaboration and strategic discussions on implementing the PDM and population health initiatives.

Community Health Outreaches

Extensive health camps are underway, offering critical services such as cervical cancer screening, comprehensive family planning services, and general health check-ups to the local populace. Lugolobi revealed that in a direct effort to bolster healthcare infrastructure, the commemorations will include the distribution of: 15 Delivery beds, 5 Incubators, 12 Stethoscopes and 200 Mama kits and surgical gloves.

Environmental Conservation

Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable well-being, 20,000 trees are being planted across the district, contributing to environmental protection and climate resilience.

Empowering Girls and Education

Initiatives for the day will also include training girls in reusable sanitary pad making and the donation of 10 sewing machines, promoting menstrual hygiene and economic empowerment. Furthermore, 21 desktop computers are being provided to selected schools, and solar systems are being installed at Kanjuki SS and Busaana SS, enhancing digital literacy and access to clean energy.

Improving Water Access

Water tanks are being installed at Kangulumira UMEA P/S, Busaale P/S, and New Hope P/S, addressing a fundamental need for clean water in educational institutions.

Sports and Education Competitions

This will include games and events aimed at engaging the youth and fostering community spirit; events include a bicycle race, football and netball tournaments, and a thought-provoking secondary school debate.

Museveni to Grace Celebrations

Lugolobi revealed the national event is set to be graced by His Excellency, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, as the Guest of Honour. President Museveni’s presence will underscore the high-level government commitment to the objectives of World Population Day and the Parish Development Model.

A significant highlight of the President’s visit will be the commissioning of the Kayunga-Baale-Galiraya-Kasokwe Road. This major infrastructure development is expected to dramatically improve connectivity within Kayunga District, unlock new economic opportunities, and facilitate better access to markets and social services for residents.

Make sure to be a part of this year’s World Population Day in Kayunga because it’s an event you wouldn’t want to miss!
