A high-level Trade and Investment Mission from Mombasa, Kenya, comprising representatives from 12 companies, conducted a pivotal visit to key trade facilitation structures at Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, with the intent to promote intra-East African trade.
This mission, operating under the theme “Promoting Intra-East African Trade and Investment for Economic Development,” aimed to identify tangible opportunities for collaboration and address persistent barriers to seamless trade between the two East African powerhouses.
Led by Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, the delegation embarked on a comprehensive tour, meticulously exploring the Uganda Free Zones Authority, examining various Export Promotion structures, and inspecting the state-of-the-art Cargo Terminal Building at Entebbe International Airport.
The objective was clear: to gain firsthand insight into Uganda’s advancements in trade infrastructure and pinpoint areas for enhanced regional synergy, directly aligning with recommendations from the influential May 2024 Uganda-Kenya Joint Ministerial Commission.
Uganda’s Commitment to Air Cargo Efficiency
During the guided tour, facilitated by Mr. Dennis Oloro, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA)’s Ag. Manager Economic Regulation, and Mr. Swalik Kakaire Magezi, Ag. Chief Security Officer, the Kenyan delegation expressed strong appreciation for Uganda’s notable strides in modernising its cargo handling and clearance processes. This modernisation is crucial for reducing transit times, cutting costs, and making East African goods more competitive on the global stage.
The visitors particularly commended the collaborative efforts of key players in boosting air cargo efficiency, including the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), leading ground handlers Menzies Aviation and DAS Handling, and other vital stakeholders.
This multi-agency cooperation, according to Mr. Oloro, is essential for creating a streamlined and effective air cargo ecosystem.
Forging Stronger Cross-Border Ties
Ambassador Mukumbya extended heartfelt thanks to the UCAA Management for their warm hospitality and detailed insights.
He reaffirmed Kenya’s unwavering commitment to continued cross-border trade cooperation, signalling a mutual desire to strengthen economic ties and facilitate the free movement of goods and services within the East African Community.
This mission underscores the growing regional push to enhance trade logistics and infrastructure.
As East African economies continue to expand, efficient air cargo operations at strategic hubs like Entebbe International Airport become paramount for realising the full potential of intra-regional trade and driving collective economic development.
The collaboration showcased during this visit sets a positive precedent for future joint initiatives aimed at dismantling trade barriers and fostering a more integrated and prosperous East Africa.
