In a significant move to deepen economic cooperation, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Ville Tavio, has announced that Finnish companies are ready to partner with African nations in key strategic sectors.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, during a meeting with African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President Sidi Ould Tah on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA80), signals a new era of collaboration focused on driving Africa’s digital and sustainable transition.
Strategic Investment Beyond Development Aid
Minister Tavio highlighted Finland’s readiness to collaborate in sectors critical for Africa’s future, including telecommunications, sustainable mining, digitalisation, industrialisation, and Smart Electricity Grids with Intelligent Load Distribution.
President Ould Tah welcomed this willingness to cooperate with Finland, emphasising that “investments in these strategic sectors far exceed what public development assistance alone can provide.”
This statement underscores the shared understanding that mobilising the private sector and forging innovative partnerships are essential to maximising the impact of development projects across the continent.
Legacy of Partnership and Innovation
Finland is already a long-standing and committed partner of the AfDB Group.
Its contributions to the African Development Fund (ADF) have increased by a remarkable 64% over the last two cycles, demonstrating its growing commitment to the continent’s development.
Beyond financial contributions, Finland is a co-founder of the Africa Circular Economy Facility, which supports the transition to a circular economy.
Furthermore, its development finance institution, Finnfund, is actively investing in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and digital solutions in Africa.
This commitment was recently bolstered by a European Union guarantee under the “Africa Connected” program, which will help Finnfund mobilise more than €1 billion (over Shs4.114 trillion) in investments for Africa’s digital economy.
This partnership between Finland and the AfDB is a powerful model for how developed nations and multilateral institutions can collaborate to create a resilient and prosperous future for Africa.
