Four marketing leaders behind Uganda’s biggest brands named among Africa’s CMO100

By Publicist East Africa

Behind every great brand is a leader who understands not only consumers, but culture, innovation, reputation and growth.

That reality was celebrated at the inaugural Africa CMO100, where four executives leading some of Uganda’s most influential consumer brands were recognised among Africa’s 100 Most Influential Chief Marketing Officers.

The honourees include Kitenda Robert Gobii, Chief Marketing Officer at Movit; Sylvia ElSheikh, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda; Wangechi Gitahi, Head of Marketing at Nile Breweries; and Catherine Ndungu, Marketing and Innovations Director at Uganda Breweries Limited (Diageo).

While only Kitenda Robert Gobii appears on the official Africa CMO100 list under Uganda, the recognition of all four executives highlights something far more significant than nationality. Together, they lead the marketing functions of brands that reach millions of Ugandan consumers every day and collectively shape one of East Africa’s most dynamic consumer markets.

The inaugural Africa CMO100 was established by Brand Africa in partnership with African Business, MIPAD and the African Media Agency to recognise the strategic leaders driving Africa’s most influential brands. Rather than rewarding advertising campaigns alone, the initiative celebrates marketing executives whose work delivers measurable business growth, customer trust, innovation and long-term brand value.

For years, chief executives have occupied the spotlight in conversations about corporate success. The Africa CMO100 shifts attention to another group of executives whose decisions increasingly determine whether organisations grow, innovate and remain relevant in highly competitive markets. Today’s chief marketing officers are no longer custodians of advertising budgets alone; they are commercial strategists, customer advocates, reputation managers and architects of business growth.

Uganda’s representation reflects this evolution.

Kitenda Robert Gobii

Movit, under the marketing leadership of Kitenda Robert Gobii, has evolved from a home-grown beauty and personal care company into one of East Africa’s most recognisable consumer brands, expanding its footprint beyond Uganda while competing against global players.

Sylvia ElSheikh

At MTN Uganda, Sylvia ElSheikh has helped steer the marketing strategy of the country’s largest telecommunications company, leading initiatives that connect millions of customers while supporting the company’s transformation into a digital services provider.

Wangechi Gitahi

Nile Breweries’ Wangechi Gitahi has overseen marketing for one of Uganda’s most competitive beverage portfolios, where consumer preferences, innovation and brand loyalty remain central to sustained market leadership.

Meanwhile, Catherine Ndungu leads Marketing and Innovations at Uganda Breweries Limited, part of global beverage giant Diageo, where brand building, premiumisation and innovation continue to shape the company’s position within Uganda’s fast-moving consumer goods sector.

Catherine Ndungu

Together, these executives represent a diverse mix of indigenous enterprise and multinational investment. More importantly, they demonstrate that Uganda has become an important market for world-class marketing leadership. As East African economies become increasingly integrated, executive talent is moving more freely across borders, with organisations placing greater emphasis on attracting the best leaders regardless of nationality.

The Africa CMO100 also offers a glimpse into broader trends shaping marketing across the continent. Consumer goods, beverages, telecommunications and financial services featured prominently among the inaugural honourees, reflecting industries where customer experience, innovation and brand trust have become decisive competitive advantages. The list also underscores the growing influence of women in marketing leadership, with female executives accounting for a significant share of the recognised leaders.

For Uganda’s marketing profession, the recognition carries an important message.

It demonstrates that marketing has firmly established itself as a boardroom function. Modern marketing leaders are expected to influence corporate strategy, drive digital transformation, unlock new markets, strengthen stakeholder confidence and deliver measurable commercial outcomes. In many organisations, the Chief Marketing Officer has become one of the most consequential voices shaping long-term business success.

As Uganda’s economy continues to grow and regional competition intensifies, the calibre of marketing leadership within the country’s leading companies will become an increasingly important differentiator. The recognition of executives leading brands such as Movit, MTN Uganda, Nile Breweries and Uganda Breweries Limited is therefore not simply an acknowledgement of individual excellence. It is a reflection of the growing sophistication of Uganda’s corporate landscape and its emergence as a strategic hub for brand building and consumer engagement in East Africa.

Behind every trusted brand is an exceptional marketing leader. The inaugural Africa CMO100 reminds us that while consumers often remember the brands, it is visionary leadership behind the scenes that turns products into household names and businesses into enduring institutions.
