Stanbic Bank and UCC Launch ‘Ongea’ Summit to Professionalise Uganda’s Creator Economy

Stanbic Bank Uganda, in a major strategic collaboration with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Ongea Africa, and the Uganda Digital Society (UDS), has officially launched the Stanbic Ongea Digital Creators Summit 2025, slated for December 11th, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

This national platform is designed to transform Uganda’s youth-driven creator economy by focusing on digital skills, business capacity, financial literacy, and responsible content creation.

The launch, held at Onomo Hotel in Kampala on Friday, signals a multi-stakeholder commitment to strengthening one of the nation’s fastest-growing sectors—one critical to youth employment and digital entrepreneurship.

Stanbic’s UGX 1 Trillion Commitment and Scholarship-Based Awards

She also revealed that the bank unveiled the Stanbic Digital Content Creator Annual Prize, featuring five high-impact, scholarship-based awards to be administered through Red & Yellow, accessed locally via the Uganda Digital Society (UDS).

The awards include;

Emerging Creator Award (Short Course)

Social Impact Creator Award (Mid-Level Course)

Entertainment Excellence Award (Motion Graphics and Animation), and

Financial Literacy Creator Award (Business and Management Insights).

Kwikiriza emphasised that the focus is on sustainable empowerment: “Skills outlive trophies. These scholarships will give creators world-class capabilities to grow, monetise, and professionalise their work. This speaks to our commitment to youth empowerment and digital transformation.”

Stanbic also highlighted its Youth Customer Value Proposition (CVP) benefits, such as digital account opening, no monthly fees, and financial literacy programs, designed to support creators operating as small businesses.

UCC Championing Digital Safety and Affordability

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), represented by Kenneth Tweheyo, Head of Competition and Consumer Affairs, applauded the launch, noting its alignment with the Uganda Communications Act, 2013.

Tweheyo highlighted UCC’s core mandates that support the creator ecosystem, which are:

Licensing and Regulation: Ensuring a secure and innovative digital environment.

Consumer Protection: Running safety campaigns and digital literacy programs, including the UCC Debate Series.

Innovation and Access

Tweheyo noted that the UCC is committed to supporting digital skills through ICT labs and the UCC Innovation Hub. He stressed that this can be achieved through enforcing fair pricing and network coverage obligations, which require at least 95% population coverage.

“We support platforms like the Ongea Digital Creators Summit because they encourage responsible content creation, digital safety, and innovation. Together, we can grow a safe, inclusive, and empowered digital ecosystem,” Tweheyo stated.

Ongea Africa as a National Development Platform

Joseph Kanyamunyu, Summit Director at Ongea Africa, stressed that the Summit is not merely an event but a national development platform designed to empower youth with skills, business tools, policy awareness, and commercial opportunities.

“The Digital Creators Summit will feature the Ongea Skills Lab for digital and business skill-building, the Ongea Awards (linked to the Stanbic scholarships), Roundtable Sessions with key stakeholders, and Discounted Training, including a Red & Yellow 50% course offer for up to 200 delegates, supported by the Uganda Digital Society (UDS)”, Kanyamunyu said.

He emphasised that the overall initiative aims to enhance Uganda’s competitiveness in Africa’s digital creator landscape by promoting responsible content, improving youth employment readiness, and strengthening public-private collaboration.
