African Union Pushes for Single Air Transport Market to Accelerate Intra-African Trade

The African Union (AU) is making a concerted push to accelerate the implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), a flagship initiative aimed at unlocking the continent’s vast economic potential.

At the 42nd International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly in Montreal, Canada, the AU’s Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, H.E. Lerato D. Mataboge, reaffirmed that operationalising SAATM remains a top priority.

This move, she noted, is crucial for driving intra-African trade and fostering greater economic integration.

Unified Vision for a Connected Continent

The SAATM, launched in 2018, is designed to create a unified air transport market that will open up Africa’s skies, improving connectivity and competitiveness.

By liberalising air travel, the initiative seeks to serve a potential market of over 1.3 billion people across 55 member states.

H.E Mataboge told the General Assembly that, “This strategic move is intended to boost Africa’s modest 2% share of global air traffic, ensuring the continent plays a more significant role in international aviation.”

Commissioner Mataboge emphasised Africa’s united support for the continent’s eight ICAO Council candidates, showcasing a unified front dedicated to advancing shared aviation priorities on the global stage.

These efforts extend beyond aviation, with the Commissioner underscoring the importance of collaboration across aviation, digital, and energy sectors to unlock new markets and drive integration under both SAATM and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The importance of Africa’s collective voice was also a central theme at the ICAO Assembly. The first Africa Coordination Meeting brought together African Union Member States to rally support for the continent’s eight ICAO Council candidates, including Uganda, Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa. Uganda’s interests in the matter were presented to the General Assembly by Mr. Kabbs Twijuke, who is the country’s official representative to the ICAO.

This show of unity, under the slogan “United for Greater Representation,” sends a strong message that Africa’s cohesion is its greatest strength. As Commissioner Mataboge stated, this collective engagement is essential for strengthening Africa’s position within the global aviation sphere.

Paving the Way for Inter-African Trade

By creating a more open and competitive air transport market, SAATM will have a profound impact on inter-African trade.

Lower travel costs and increased route availability will make it easier for businesses to move goods and people across borders.

This will not only boost tourism and commerce but also facilitate the movement of skills and investment, contributing to a more integrated and prosperous Africa.

The AU’s continued advocacy on platforms like the ICAO Assembly is a clear sign that the continent is committed to leveraging aviation as a key enabler of its Agenda 2063 vision for a “prosperous and peaceful Africa.”
