The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) launched a landmark initiative this week, the Youth Economic Empowerment (YEE) Project, designed to build the skills, capacity, and confidence of young people across Tanzania.
This flagship program, a core part of EACOP’s sustainability policy, signals the company’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the pipeline project extend far beyond infrastructure, creating lasting value for communities.
The launch ceremony, held in Bukombe, Geita, was graced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko.
He underscored the importance of community ownership for the project’s success, saying, “I have always said that for any project to succeed, it must be owned and protected by the people. EACOP’s step of introducing YEE is an excellent way of bringing communities closer to their project.”
This sentiment highlights the government’s support for initiatives that integrate citizens into the broader value chain of the EACOP project. The YEE project is a direct response to this vision.
Dr. Biteko noted that the YEE project is part of EACOP’s commitment to building the capacity of youth and increasing their access to economic opportunities within the communities impacted by the project.
As the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, noted, this program aligns perfectly with national development priorities, particularly in conjunction with the government’s efforts to extend electricity access to these communities.
Empowering the Next Generation
The EACOP Acting General Manager, Mr. Geofrey Mponda, explained that the company’s responsibility goes beyond pipeline construction.
“This initiative reflects EACOP’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the pipeline go beyond infrastructure delivery. By equipping young people with skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship opportunities, we are investing in the future and creating lasting value for communities across Tanzania,” he said.
He revealed that the first phase of the YEE Project will be rolled out across the regions of Geita, Kagera, Tabora, and Tanga. Over the next 24 months, it is set to benefit approximately 12,261 youth in 152 villages. The program’s curriculum is comprehensive, offering:
Practical Skills Training: Equipping young people with skills relevant to their current roles.
Financial Literacy: Teaching sound money management and investment practices.
Entrepreneurship and Digital Business: Providing the knowledge and tools needed to start and formalise their ventures in the digital age.
Mentorship and Guidance: Guiding youth groups on strategies to grow their businesses.
With its guiding motto, “Learn, Grow, Empower Yourself,” the YEE Project is a powerful statement of EACOP’s long-term commitment to sustainable development.
It is an investment in the people who will live and work along the pipeline, ensuring that the project’s legacy is one of prosperity and empowerment for generations to come.
