In a major boost for intra-African connectivity, Uganda Airlines, under the leadership of Ms. Jenifer Bamuturaki as CEO, has finalised an interline agreement with Airlink, Southern Africa’s leading regional carrier.
This strategic partnership, announced in a statement on Monday by Uganda Airlines Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations, Shakila Rahim Lamar, is poised to revolutionise travel between East and Southern Africa, offering seamless journeys to over 45 destinations and directly fueling Uganda’s tourism and trade ambitions.
The collaboration instantly links Uganda’s hub at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) to Airlink’s extensive network across Southern Africa, primarily through a convenient connection via Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).
“The partnership will support, among others, Expanded Network Access, where guests will enjoy convenient, single-ticket access to Air Link’s comprehensive network of over 45 destinations, including popular business and leisure spots like Cape Town, Durban, Victoria Falls, Windhoek, among others,” Lamar says in the statement.
Unlocking Africa’s Tourism Gems
The primary impact of this interline agreement is the simplification of travel across the continent, making diverse tourism attractions accessible on a single ticket. This streamlined travel experience, according to Lamar, is a game-changer for tourists seeking multi-country African itineraries.
As a result of this interline partnership, travellers can now effortlessly connect Uganda’s famed attractions, such as mountain gorillas and the source of the Nile, with the spectacular offerings of Southern Africa, including:
Wildlife Safaris: Access to key safari hubs like Maun and Kasane in Botswana, and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Coastal Destinations: Connecting to vibrant cities and oceanside locations like Cape Town and Durban in South Africa, and destinations in Mozambique.
Natural Wonders: Providing access to diverse attractions ranging from mountains and deserts to the unique landscapes across the region.
This expanded network, according to Lamar, significantly enhances the Pearl of Africa’s appeal to global tourists by placing it within a cohesive continental travel circuit.
Facilitating Seamless Trade and Business
Beyond tourism, the partnership also serves as a vital bridge for business and trade between East and Southern Africa. By eliminating the need for separate bookings and multiple check-ins, the agreement reduces logistical hurdles for business executives and traders.
One-Ticket Convenience: Passengers enjoy the efficiency of booking a single ticket, receiving a unified itinerary, and having their baggage through-checked to their final destination.
Enhanced Trade Links: This improved efficiency facilitates the movement of business executives, essential for fostering investment, trade partnerships, and expanding market reach for Ugandan goods into the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Economic Hub Access: The partnership provides Ugandan travellers with efficient and direct access to Southern Africa’s key economic centers, strengthening economic ties and promoting bilateral trade between the two regions.
Step Towards True Intra-African Connectivity
The interline agreement is a strategic move that aligns with the broader objective of making intra-African travel easier and more efficient. For Uganda Airlines it expands its global reach and leverages the proven regional expertise of Airlink.
For Airlink customers, the partnership opens up Uganda Airlines’ growing route network across East and Central Africa, fulfilling the collective goal of creating a more interconnected, competitive, and accessible African aviation network.
The collaboration is a major step toward positioning Entebbe as a critical hub connecting East Africa to the continent’s southern markets.
