The Government of Uganda is taking a significant step to boost the nation’s coffee sector by promoting its high-quality coffee at the World Speciality Coffee Conference and Exhibition (SCAJ 2025) in Tokyo, Japan, from September 24-27, 2025.
This high-profile event is the largest of its kind in Asia and represents a major opportunity to build new export linkages and increase economic returns for the country’s coffee farmers.
A Strategic Move for Uganda’s Farmers
For Ugandan coffee farmers, participation in the SCAJ 2025 is a game-changer. The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), in collaboration with the Ugandan Embassy in Japan, is adopting a Business-to-Business (B2B) model.
This approach allows local exporters and representatives to directly interact with potential buyers on a major global platform.
This direct engagement bypasses intermediaries, potentially leading to better prices and more sustainable partnerships for farmers.
Uganda, recognised as the birthplace of Robusta coffee, will showcase its unique product at booth 3101 at the Tokyo Big Sight.

This exhibition is a crucial part of the government’s strategy to expand beyond its leading export destinations, which currently include Italy (31.1%), Sudan (12.5%), and Germany (11.4%).
By penetrating new, high-value markets like Japan, Uganda can diversify its export base and reduce its reliance on a few key buyers.
Coffee as an Economic Engine
The Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, has consistently highlighted coffee’s potential to transform the economies of exporting countries.
“The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, remains committed to protecting the interests of coffee farmers and ensuring that Uganda’s coffee sector continues to thrive as a cornerstone of our economy and a source of livelihood for millions of households,” Hon. Tumwebaze contends.
Uganda’s positive trend in coffee export growth is a testament to this, with increased productivity and penetration into key markets.
By actively promoting Ugandan coffee on platforms like SCAJ 2025, the government is committed to maximising the economic returns that directly benefit the millions of farmers who depend on coffee for their livelihoods.
This initiative is a clear sign that the government is dedicated to building a more prosperous future for its coffee farmers and solidifying coffee’s position as a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy.
