UTB Tasks Princess Komuntale to Lead Uganda’s Tourism Charge in the U.S.

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has taken a decisive step in its mission to position the country as a premier global destination, moving beyond its renowned wildlife to showcase the country’s profound cultural heritage.

In a landmark strategic move, the UTB has since appointed Her Royal Highness, Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale of the Tooro Kingdom, as Uganda’s Tourism Ambassador for the United States market. Princess Komuntale is in the country to take part in the celebration of Tooro Kingdom Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru’s 30th coronation anniversary, locally known as Empango.

Her appointment, unveiled on Thursday, September 4, 2025, by Ms. Juliana Kagwa, the Chief Executive Officer of UTB, is not merely a symbolic gesture; it signifies a new chapter in Uganda’s tourism strategy, which leverages the power of cultural icons to unlock new international markets.

“The Princess of Toro Kingdom, Ruth Komutale, who has lived in Texas, USA, for several years, will represent Uganda abroad as a tourism ambassador, highlighting her Ugandan roots and deep understanding of the country’s culture,” Kagwa said.

“This is part of the initiatives we rolled out after realising that our brothers and sisters in the diaspora had been left out when it comes to tourism. Having been born here, she is the best person to represent us because she knows what Uganda is and what it stands for,” she added.

A Cultural Cornerstone for Global Promotion

This partnership, according to Kagwa, reflects a growing understanding that culture is one of Uganda’s strongest assets.

With her deep cultural roots in the Tooro Kingdom and a strong presence in the U.S., Princess Komuntale is uniquely positioned to tell Uganda’s story compellingly.

Kagwa stressed that “Princess Komuntale’s voice will amplify the nation’s rich traditions, heritage, and cultural events like the Empango celebrations,” noting that the strategy aims to attract interest in Uganda’s diverse cuisine, music, and the authentic hospitality of its people.

The appointment is a key part of UTB’s wider strategy, which includes:

Leveraging cultural icons and the Ugandan diaspora to open new international markets.

Blending heritage with modern, immersive tourism experiences.

Strengthening Destination Uganda’s visibility and competitiveness on the global stage.

As the UTB asserts, this approach ensures that “tourism becomes more than travel; it becomes a journey into identity, belonging, and pride.”

Tourism’s Economic Powerhouse

The decision to focus on cultural tourism is a high-stakes one, given the sector’s vital contribution to Uganda’s economy.

Tourism is a powerful engine of growth, creating jobs, generating foreign exchange, and driving economic development.

According to recent data from the Ministry of Finance, Tourism receipts have climbed to USD1.5 billion, a figure that is projected to grow in the next financial year.

The sector is also a major source of employment, providing jobs to thousands of Ugandans, both directly and indirectly, and contributing to the country’s overall economic stability.

A deliberate strategy to expand the tourism offer and attract a new segment of travellers is crucial to ensuring this growth continues.

The collaboration with the Tooro Kingdom is thus helping the UTB build experiences that carry “the true promise of the Pearl of Africa to the world.”

By blending the rich legacy of Uganda’s cultural institutions with the vibrant landscape of its tourism offer, the country is creating a more holistic and compelling brand.

This strategic move is set to captivate the U.S. market, encouraging travellers to look beyond the popular safaris and gorilla trekking, and to embark on a journey that explores the heart and soul of the nation.

It represents a bold and innovative approach to tourism promotion that could serve as a model for other countries seeking to leverage their cultural heritage for national development.
